The Passion of St. George the New
Saint George was the son of pious parents; he had a father named John, who belonged to the nobility of the city of Medica [Sredets or Sofia - the capital of the Bulgarian principality In 441 Sofia was devastated by the Huns, in 809 it was conquered by the Bulgarians, in 1382 it fell into the hands of the Turks on December 22, 1877.
was taken by the Russians, under the leadership of Gurko, with most of the Muslim population fleeing.] , and a mother, named Maria.
George was given to his parents by their earnest prayer, for they had reached old age and had no children, like the ancient Abraham and Sarah; for this reason John and Mary earnestly prayed to the Lord, His Most Holy Mother and to the holy great martyr George of Cappadocia [Her great martyr, of course, is George the Victorious (his memory is celebrated on April 23.) ]; to the church of this year of God they came daily, made charity here and
And they prayed to the Lord, that he would deliver them from their bondage.
And the Lord did not despise their prayers, but gave them in their old age the fruit of the womb of a male.
The boy was brought up in the fear of God and was taught to read books; George soon learned the Scriptures so well that he surpassed all his peers in his knowledge.
At that time, Bulgaria was ruled by the Saracens; when Blessed George was twenty-five years old (his parents had already turned to the Lord), the Saracens began to incline him to their wickedness, saying to him: "Georgius, leave Christianity and accept our faith.
And when the Saracens heard these words, they began to lay upon the head of St. John a cap, which they used to wear on their heads, and in which they went into their houses of prayer. But the saint answered them, saying, It is not fitting for us Christians to imitate your wicked customs, and to wear our caps on our heads, and to deny Christ, the true God, the Creator of heaven and earth, and to deprive ourselves of the fruit of holy baptism.
Tell me, can I believe in Muhammad, who was not sent by God, but by God's prophets and apostles, but was a simple commander of the army of Satan, carrying with him the staff of the devil? Behold, you yourselves do not know what you believe, but you yourselves have departed from the way of truth. Thus denouncing the Saracens, St. George began to loudly confess Christ to be the true God, the Creator and Maker of all that is, visible and invisible, earthly and heavenly.
And when he had spat in the face of the wicked, and called them ungodly men, the saint threw the toffee on the ground, and began to tread upon her feet, and said unto himself, O George, wherefore tarryest thou? Christ calleth thee.
And the king was astonished at the beauty of the saint's face, and at his courageous countenance, and said to him flatteringly,
If you deny Jesus Christ, whom you call the Son of God, and if you obey the command of the tyrant Selim [Selim I, Turkish sultan, reigned from 1512 to 1529; distinguished by extraordinary fanaticism (religious intolerance).] and do his will (to this Selim many kingdoms obey), then you will receive many gifts and all kinds of honors from our king and you will be appointed chief of all the voivodes of the great city of Middle-earth.
But the martyr of Christ again confessed the Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of a great multitude, and denounced and rebuked the Saracen faith. Then the martyr, in his rage, ordered that the saint be beaten with sticks without mercy. And St. George was tortured so cruelly that his flesh clung to the sticks, and his blood flowed from his ulcers.
Then the governor ordered that his whole body be cut with knives, from head to foot, and that his wounds be burned with burning candles. The whole body of the saint was burned with candles, so that his face was not seen, and his flesh was like wax melted by fire.
Then the martyr ordered the soldiers to carry the martyr around the city, beat him on the timpani and shout: "Do not curse the messenger of God Mahomet and do not carry his traditions about the Saracen faith".
But he fell to the ground speechless from his wounds, his lips only moving, crying out to the Lord for help. The Saracens took the saint alive and threw him on the fire.
But God revealed Himself to whomever He pleased, and there came from the sky a cloud with thunder and lightning, and there came a heavy rain, and the fire was extinguished, and there was not even smoke from the fire.
Then the proto-priest of the cathedral church in honor of the holy great martyr George of Cappadocia went with the other Christians to the judges, giving them money, and asked them permission to take the remains of the holy martyr and give them a customary burial.
The Metropolitan went to the relics of the holy martyr with great haste and faith, accompanied by the whole holy council and many Christ-loving people, singing psalms and hymns, with candles and incense.
In the same places where the holy martyr of Christ was watered by night in the city and where his blood dripped, the light appeared at night, as if from a burning candle; this was seen by all Christians. Taking the honourable remains of the holy martyr, the metropolitan placed them in a rack in the church of the holy great martyr George of Cappadocia.
St. George suffered in the Bulgarian town of Sredne, where he was raised; he received his martyrdom in 7022 from the creation of the world, from the birth of the Word of God in the flesh in 1514, on the 26th day of the month of May.
May 26th is then taken as the day of the transfer of his relics.] , into the kingdom over all our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever.
By the divine desire of his youth he set himself up before the Lord, in prayer and fasting, the form of virtue, wealth and glory, and the virtue of the flesh as not being a thing to be despised, and he loved Christ the One from the heart, and the true essence of God, worshipped in the Trinity, he preached to the ungodly Turks, and the faith of the Sarakes, and the laws of Muhammad under his feet, and he corrected the tormentors, and terrified the tormentors, he adorned the crown of glory, to the heavenly rising of the sarakes.
I'm going to tell you something. I'm going to tell you something.
Pray to Christ God to preserve your country, and save the Orthodox emperor, and the people, and the city, and your feats are worthy of veneration.
As the brightest star has appeared, so the world's unfailing sun, the righteous sun of Christ, proclaimers of your sufferings, the great martyr of Christ, George, and the charm of your passion, you have extinguished, and the traditions and laws of Muhammad you have trampled under your feet. And the lawless king and torturers you have terrified with your strong patience, and the faithful have given light, praying to God unceasingly for us all.
I 'm going to have to get back to you .
